  • Faux thatch for roofs

    Hello,

I was curious to know if anyone out there has come across a source for fake thatch that can be used for roofs. Not tropical, more like what you would see on an english country home?

    Thank yo,
    Darkangel

Are you using chicken wire to adhere it to?
We have used basic straw and thatched roofs..it lasts a long time but the downfall is to retain its fresh color you have to add more each season..but it is waterproof.
The 2nd suggestion is go into cabela's its online and they have several fake type of thatch that is uded for cameoflauging(sp?) duck boats, We have used this also- its sort of pricey but real good quality.

      Thanks Sandy,

Actually I was thinking of simply stapling or somehow attaching the thatch to a wooden panel made to be a roof. I want to create an old house look....

      thanks,

Darkangel, if you went into oriental trading its also online - they have the raffia in sections that you would use for like table skirting...it may have to be trimmed to give that layered look to it that the english cottage has but its not too expensive.

Even if you were to collect cattails foliage and staple that when it was green early season that would work and by fall it will have turned a tan brown.

Would you need to fire proof this? For a professional Haunt?

You bet! You need to flame retard everything!

Yes of course, if it cannot be bought with flame protection I would make it flame proof....

                Thanks,

This is the stuff that is used at the Disney attractions. It's called Endureed. It's pricey but it is flameproof and lasts for many years. The link will take you to the Somerset line which duplicates the look of the english thatched cottage.

Geeze, I thought you wanted the thatched roof that was of the tropical kind-
so sorry, but perhaps the floor tile products that come in squares would work.
Different shades of browns, but they have to be cut so the apperance would give a staggered look by using various sizes. You wouldn't have the thickness but the perception when viewing from a distance would look like what your trying to achieve.
But If you did it this way a staple gun may not work, might have to use an air nailer.

Another thing to try is to use sheets of Styrofoam, depending on the size of the roof, then round the eaves side a bit with with a rasp. Use a small round soldering iron, burn lots of lines running down the foam to give it that straw look. Along the eaves, burn in a lot of little holes to simulate the ends of the straw. Paint the foam with a medium brown latex paint then highlight with a light tan/straw color. Use a gray wash to age the roof.

One of the things I noticed about the thatched roofs in Disneyland was that the strands were artificial and hollow. All I could think was "Man, somebody spent an awful lot of time stripping wire insulation..."

I have ordered from safari thatch, and everything went well. Amazulu, I don't have any first hand knowledge of.
