For you guys/girls just starting out, I found this Owner's Manual -PDF for a Radio Shack Mixer. It has great info about wiring your sound. I REALLY recommend you look at the 70v wiring system. THis is what we use and it is CHEAP and effective. Take the mystery out of your sound system. You can buy a mixer/amp for $100+ and create a great background sound for you haunt. For the beginner haunter, this can't be beat. I am including this 70v scheme in my new book. (Coming soon!)
