While doing the tour of area Haunted Houses in Memphis, I talked a lot with other haunted house patrons. A lot of people seemed to love the idea of hitting all of the area haunted houses (and I know I gave directions for lots of groups to get to other haunted houses after they had finished one).
During these discussions, I had three different variations of a story come up (at three different locations), and since Holloween a friend of a friend told the same story. The whole thing made no sense to me at all, but I found it interesting that the "legend" of this haunted house spread so wide. I don't believe it's real, as I wasn't able to confirm anything about it online and I even drove by places it was supposedly supposed to exist. Some of the "facts" from these stories, mixed and matched:
- Multiple floors
- Each floor supposed to be scarier as you go up
- So scary, nobody EVER makes it to the top (and most people don't make it past a couple floors)
- If anyone makes it all of the way through, they get their money back
- One story priced it at $50, another at $100
- One story said it was 13 floors
- One story said it was in an old closed down hospital
- One story said it was invitation only (same person who said it was $100)
Of course none of this made sense to me.
- Sounds like a big money loser all around.
- I'd guarantee I'd make it through, so I'm sure others would too. Even if I found out they were really killing patrons on the 13th floor, I'd think it was fake up until the point they did the deed. (So I guess I wouldn't get my money back anyway.)
- Why spend time on super scary upper floor nobody would see?
- Haunts are really expensive...13 floors would need A LOT of people
- Actors on floors nobody would ever get to? How boring would that get?
So, I'm assuming it's all an urban legend, but it go me wondering if other cities besides Memphis had similar legends of local haunts?
