  • Princeton Marching Tiger Band Bringing Forth The Ethermuse!!

The 2009-2010 Princeton Marching Tiger Band,
under the direction of Mr. Jon Hyneman has
commissioned composer Virgil Franklin to channel
the twisted mind of literary giant Edgar Allen Poe this season.
Virgil will be composing the music for the Tiger Band's
ISSMA field show, working title "A Midnight Dreary",
based on three of Poe’s most sinister works; "The Bells",
    "Annabel Lee", and "Tell-Tale Heart".

Virgil is looking forward to hearing and seeing his three-movement
nightmare brought to life this fall!!

          Virgil here....

Thanks for the kudos! I've been a band director/ music teacher for 22 years now
and have tons of arrangements and compositions for bands of all feather.

This is the first time I've had the pleasure of writing a complete field
show of all original music and based on Poe no less!!

I'll let you all know how the show progresses...and later this fall we'll
all get to see a live video of the performance!!

I currently am working on "The Bells"...
                interesting little poem..

I hope to post samples, synthesized of course, as
                the project goes along.

Working on a marching band show these days is
alot like scoring a movie; you're matching a vision
                set by the director.

                    Thanks everybody.

I've been working on the music for a few days now and things
are perculating on the harddrives here in the studio.

They have quite a brilliant group of young musicians there as
well as two directors and several specialists working on all
                    aspects of the show.

This isn't your grandpa's marching band for sure!

The entire length of score is only 7 minutes BUT there's alot
that happens in those 7 minutes!!

                    I'll keep you posted!

I can't wait to see the videos. I think this is such a great idea. There was actually a band that used the theme "The Tell-Tale Heart". They didn't stay very true to the piece throughout the show, and they decided to use a lot of scatter drill (or maybe the formations were jsut really off), but it was still an interesting concept. I'm sure you can turn it into something that goes way beyond what they did though.

I'm just composing the music; not writing the drill. (thank goodness)

I've had to write drill before and.. well...I'd raither compose music!

Oh. I'm just in the marching band, but I've done both. Obviously, since I've only marched for one year, it wasn't anything compared to what I'm sure you can and will do.

I think that composing music is so much easier, too. But I guess it just depends on the person. With me, I come up with tons of melodies all the time and develop them.

I have been assured that it will be recorded...

tchaunt, I have great respect for anyone who can write
drill...it is an art...something that I feel is not my forte...

marching band is something that has been in my blood for
years....at the high school and college levels..
as an old band geek I wish my body would allow me to
                              be on the field again...

                              ah the good old days!
