  • Music rights in videos your promos and haunt

For any haunts using copyrighted music from artists in their online video promos or maybe even in their haunt, do you get the right to that music before using it? Is it worth the effort? Or is it not something you worry about?

Just curious... I'm starting to work on our video promos for this season.

I actually had a simialr question on the Fright Forum.

    http://www.hauntworld.com/haunted_ho...ead.php?t=8079

Didn't get a whole lot of response there either. I'd been reading up a lot on ASCAP. Based on reading their website, haunts seem to be exactly the kind of business they'd like to go after if unlicensed music gets used, and it doesn't sound cheap at all. (Looks like they try to nickel and dime things to death.) I was really surprised at how the copyright laws worked on playing music in public places.

I haven't found anything on haunts being targeted by ASCAP, but for example, they have targeted restaurants and other businesses who play CD's over their speaker system. Heck, the way the website sounds, they could sue for playing CD's during strike and setup since it's a "gathering of people".

I really would like to know if anyone has bothered with licenses for music, or if anyone has had issues with this in the past.

There are three rules to designing a haunt. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are.
