  • What kinds of/or ways do you advertise?

Since now is the time of year to begin setting up advertising, what ways do each of you use to advertise, and if you're real brave, elaborate a little for those of us who are still marketing rookies.

Since I posed the question, let me get this thread started, if people chime in, this could be a great/valuable thread to many of us, veterans or not.

Last year we did the following:
-posters and coupons of course distributed to anywhere and everywhere they would let us.
-clipper magazine, gets distributed to over 25,000 homes within a 20 mile radius of the haunt (for $100, not too bad)
-subscribers to the local newspaper, they get what are called Gold Passes, for free we can have an ad placed in the Gold Pass section for a Buy1/Get1 free ticket.
-we ran 1 ad in the FWST paper and it was the biggest waste of $600 I've ever spent, not 1 coupon came back.
    -gorilla marketing of course
-lots of Myspace, Facebook, and viral marketing
For what we did it was OK, we didn't have much of a marketing budget, this year we have much more to spend and we're branching off in new directions.

I advertise using the flyers you print.
I'm only doing this to impress 2 people ... The fire marshal and the customer that's it !!!

Now is the time to start buying air time on the radio. Holiday ads start doing their buying now. At HC, Dick Terhune, the self-proclaimed "Voice From Hell" did a seminar that talked about the benefits of radio advertising as the most efficient type of getting the word out. (depending on your budget of course)

I use Myspace almost exclusively for my Zombie Walks in Charlotte.

I do voice work for various haunts and Rotting Flesh Radio, let me know if I can be of assistance...

Badger does a fantastic job doing V.O. work for Rotting Flesh Radio and public radio.

I do also have to agree with Dick Terhune. For my other day job, I have purchased and placed many radio ads. You should have your spots bought and in order no later than July.

We have used mainly radio and posters as our main advertising vehicles, but more and more of our ad money has been going to the web.
I'm thinking about doing tv commercials this year, but not sure on what I can expect, or need to spend to get a return on my effort.

                    Bart,

How much is your cost per click-thru when you buy direct from Google/Yahoo/MSN etc.? My guess is 50-60 cents, but since I'm not the one who buys those here I wasn't sure. Also, what amount of budget do you spend on these?

                      Click-thru

Click-thrus cost around 16 to 17 cents per clicks at the most is what I spend in Dallas. We spent about $6000 in click-thrus in 2008. This is the really cool thing about click-thrus. You can regulate or stop the ads when you spend a certain amount of money per day. What I like about the most is that you pay when someone actually clicks to go to your site from the ad! Most of our advertising budget, which is still kinda small being that we have been open only 2 years, is spent on click-thrus. The rest goes to club flyers and posters.
Story: Mike Malec from Thrillvania (my previous home for 12 years) ask me what the hell I was doing. "Any thing I searched that is halloween or haunt related you pop up! Your even on myspace google ads!"
It has worked so far...... We had a 60% increase in attendance last year. We will be doing surveys this year to find out where people are finding us at.
