  • A Haunting of Vegas

You know, I have always wondered what is would be like for Las Vegas to have a year round haunted attractions. I mean why not? They have every other kind of attraction there! Just a thought!

A few problems witha year round place. 1st, would you be able to have enough people go through a place year round to make it profitable, especially in Vegas. Secondly, I went to the haunt that used to be in Orlando, Skull Kingdom in Feb back in 2006. I think they had 1-2 actors in it. Very hard to keep actors motivated if they are haunting year round I think. So you would be left with a fully automated haunt, and I am not sure how scary or fun that would be....

It would also be sort of like..

When someone would trying to get me to buy an ad in a magazine, I would ask them how many pages were going to be in it?
If there were only 35 pages versus 135 pages my lowly ad would/should be seen more often and easier to find.
I don't think many people are left wandering around Vegas looking for something to do. Just wandering around Vegas just "looking" is something to do.

Year round haunt in Vegas???? Just one word...NEVER!

People do not come to Vegas to much more than gamble and see shows.

We had a seasonal haunt right ON the Strip...20 feet from the curb!!!

Worst year we ever had!! People just walk by!!!

Strip shows are all geared for 90 min. period, why???

They found that is about as long as people would stay away from the tables and slots.

Leave a casino, travel to the attractions, stand in line, go through the haunt...in 90 minutes?

We don't even have a fraction of the attendance of haunts in the midwest and back east.

Even the Haunt sponsored by and located in the Circus Circus Adventure Dome including all the rides and shows doesn't do the numbers of some of the stand alone haunts back east!!

About every 3 or 4 years some moron starts thinking that he's come up with a totally new and unique idea, a full time haunt!! You hear rumblings, then if they do enough research they go away quietly!!

Haunts do well in areas where they can augenemt the entertainment. They don't do well if they have to compete for the entertainment dollar. Vegas, Orlando??? WAY too much competition!

          There it is Rich!

You just hit upon it! "Augement" the entertainment. You just need a big rotating auger, twisting, pulling people off the street, dumping them inside the haunt!
          "WHEEEE! Spinning tunnel updated!
Of course since it's Vegas there would be a sift/screen under the auger to catch the spare change as it's falling.

            from Fright Dome

            Hello,

I see my event was mentioned in an earlier post. I own and operate the Fright Dome Halloween event in Las Vegas, which consists of 5 Haunted Houses, rides, scare zones, shows and more. To clarify we had the best year we have ever had in 2008 and we did over 60,000 people at a price point of $34 to $48 per person. I was very happy with the attendance numbers we had. We have 13 cash registers selling tickets along with 2 inside registers. We could easily do 80,000 people is we lowered our price point but unfortunately we don't have the occupancy.

If anybody has any questions concerning Las Vegas or Fright Dome let me know.

            Thank you,

            Jason Egan

              Jason,

Surprised that you are still in operation. Wasn't there a big Fright Dome auction a couple years back?

              Was that just spring cleaning?

Congrats on your attendance but to put it all out in black and white can really hit you where it hurts. I would never post numbers on a public forum myself. Don't you think that should remain private? Its one thing to share numbers with friends but its another to share it with the whole world! Shane and its. Want a real scare? Deal with the IRS!!! Shane this time.

                    from Fright Dome

                    Hey Robert,

Yes we wanted to get rid of a bunch of stuff so we could make room for our new Haunted Houses. It was a very simple way to get rid of it all at once. The auction was a good thing for us.

                    Hey Shane,

Since we are attached to a casino we have to be down to the penny on our revenue. We are 100% accurate. Our numbers are public, but I know where you are coming from. Plus we take in so much money from credit cards, debit cards, and online ticketing. Just wanted to let everyone know that Vegas still is kicking with the economy where it sits. In addition, our numbers have been printed in so many magazines too.

                    Thank you,

                    Jason

I moved here (to Vegas) almost three years ago, and I couldn't help but wonder the same thing as the original poster. It would seem like a "standard" haunt would have problems competing with the Strip attractions, but I wonder about a highly themed haunt based upon an established IP? Say, an "Adams Family" haunt? Or maybe a Scooby-Doo haunt? Something that would be part haunted house, part themed attraction?

Those are just ideas that kick around in my head though. This thread has already received responses from the two biggest names in the local haunting world, so I defer to their experience and expertise. If they say year-round doesn't work, I believe them.

It's nice to have a dream.... this guy's been talking about this for awhile. Sends out emails, tries to get buzz for it. See the thing is the guy has no money for the project only the idea. So he wants people to invest in his idea which of course he will own and operate. He's a tatoo artist, but has no haunt experience. Because of his "day job" he wants to include a tatoo parlor in the business mix with the haunt??? Boy if I'm visiting a haunt very next thing I'd want to do is get a tatoo!!

There is not a formal business plan, just the building (he probably has a friend who knows somebody that owns the building) that this guy claims he will build a haunt in....with your money of course! Business experience??? Questionable. Doesn't even mention if he owns his own shop, just an artist. Haunt experience? none.

Makes you wonder, if a year round haunt was such a viable option, why wouldn't one or more of the city's experienced haunt operators have tried something??? Heck we have all thought about a year round facility, it would even include a movie theater, horror museum, gift shop, and list goes on! The key here is that we THOUGHT about it. It's not a "new" idea! Just not a viable one. If it is such a doable option why hasn't Circus Circus opened a year round haunt??? They would by far have the best opportunity!!

There was a Ripley's Museum on Fremont Street not far from this proposed attraction. It failed and moved away! MGM Theme park...gone, Bungee jump tower...gone.... Old Vegas theme Park...gone.... face it, this is adult Disneyland. There was even an topless haunt for 2 years!!!. no more! Should tell you something! People come here to gamble and see T&A!!! Or look at it this way, when I started in the business there 18 Haunt operators..... now there are 4.

People with the money and experience have not thought of this as a viable business option. Only people with neither think it's a good idea! And they are usually new to town!!! Bad thing is it makes it difficult for the actual operators. If they do try and fail, people and sponsors might question the seasonal attractions. There have been quite a few "fly by night" operators that have come and gone (remember the 18 operators?) Vegas will always attract them. They come in with grandious ideas, no money and just make it difficult for the real business operators.
