  • Billboard Advertising: Success or Flop?

Our haunt next year will be near a freeway exit in Sacramento, California. We were thinking of advertise in numerous ways including the use of a billboard or two on the freeways. It is quite expensive, but we are wondering if you think it is worth it? Has anyone else tried billboard advertising before?

Our haunt has done 3-4 billboards a year along the interstates but I don't know how effective they have been. Although it does advertise 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is seen by hundreds of thousands of people during the season...

Whatever you do, don't pay them anywhere near what they are asking. I realize every area is different but most media outlets are begging for customers right now.

The biggest advertiser on billboards in my county is the billboard company.

Run your ad here - cheap!
      Call now. Please!

One big billboard close to your haunt (near an interstate exit or major turn) can help people find the place.

I wouldn't try to "pepper" your area with them though.

          Seems like an awesome idea

The location for the haunt I want to open has a billboard right outside of it...street side. The location and the billboard are visible from the freeway and I thought about using the billboard to A: post the haunt name and info, but B: point a giant arrow down to the building. Sounds like a great idea to me!! And in some areas, it takes them a long time to take down the boards, so you can even get EXTENDED ad time, until someone else comes to replace yours. BEST OF LUCK!

To take that a little further, after agreeing on a deal ask them about extending the time for a pittance. For example, if you have it rented for the months of September and October and it's vacant now, they may very well give you August and even July for a small price if they don't see it being rented out in the meantime.

              Billboards...

Last year we used a number of billboards. We had no measurable success. When the billboards posted, we had a good steady stream of people coming to our web site. Your billboards on the freeway should say the exit number where your haunt is... then I think you're in good shape.
Anyone who has ever been on the east coast has seen the hundreds of billboards for a truck stop called "South of the Boarder" off of I-95. Every billboard is catchy, and they tell you how many (sometimes even hundreds) miles you are away from South of the Boarder.
You may also consider a multiple year contract to try to lower the price on the board. If you have the choice between "30 sheet" printed on paper, see if they will offer printing on canvas. It is a little more expensive, but you don't need to pay to have them reprinted in later years... plus it looks MUCH better.
