  • A question I posed to my actors

On my haunts egroup I asked my actors to rate by their importance these 5 things.
1 being the most important and 5 being the least important to them.
these are listed in no particular order.

Ease of taking off and putting on
    mobility
    comfort
    looking cool/ scary
    ability to be heard

Im using the feedback to fine tune my costumes this season. Just thought Id throw it up here to hear your thoughts.

Ease of taking off and putting on 2
it's for the actors who needs the bathrooms more than one time a night

    mobility 2
if you run alot then yes and/or if there going to be standing on there feet all night.

    comfort 1
almost the same thing with mobility..

    looking cool/ scary 2.5

    ability to be heard 1.5
not only that but... to talk, see, and hear others

as an actor and going in too the industry i had my ups and down on some costmes. how long the actor(s) are going to be in the costme? i have spent in my costmes almost 6-7 hours at a night but that was before and after work too.
it's ok... the dark has many faces you can't see..

Are you looking for placing these in order of importance? I'm kinda more for sacrificing comfort for looking damn good.

      1. looking cool/ scary - That's what they have me there for

      2. mobility- Gotta be quick to get ahead of the group again to get that callback. Visibility is a big thing.

      3. ability to be heard- I grunt and work close to the public. I don't need to be loud

      4. comfort- would rather want people remember me for my costume than lack of. I use a latex full head mask. Nothing comfortable about that. lol

      5. Ease of taking off and putting on - It's part of the job. Just has to be done and if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

        For myself:

Ease of taking off and putting on - 5
        mobility - 3
        comfort - 4
        looking cool/ scary - 1
ability to be heard - 2 (lumping that in w/ vision/safety)

We have a major heat factor at our show, so comfort is part of safety from heat-stroke too

I strive to improve on ALL those factors on our costumes..

I have to agree with Stacker Steve and I wish all my Actors had that outstanding attitude! Actually, the majority do and I am very appreciative of it! I have to say though, I never ask anyone to do anything I wouldn't do and I've even been known to wear a silicone mask, most recently at the Boomtown Days event, for 12 and 1/2 hours without taking it off in incredible heat! Of course I'm a bit twisted too so that helps!

Can this list be tentative? Hahaha!! This is based on working at an amusement park haunt last season.

1 - Looking Cool/Scary...HAS to be, cause that's what your show is all about!!

2 - Mobility...Moving from room to room and jumping, ducking, and hiding...DEFINITE!!

3 - Comfort...I had straw material that hurt and itched...I fought through it, but STILL!!!

4 - Ability to be heard...I am fairly loud, but even still, just banging on walls, shaker cans and the like should suffice

5 - Ease of taking off and putting on...I only did each one ONCE a night, so it wasn't that important!!

              1. looking cool/ scary - Very important and worth being uncomfortable for.
              2. mobility - Important for working crowds to the fullest, playing in the que line, acting from room to room, etc.
              3. ability to be heard - I'm a dialogue actor, so I do not like costumes that muffle me.
              4. comfort - Because no one wants to wear a costume that stabs at them for 6 hours.
              5. Ease of taking off and putting on - I never need bathroom breaks, so the costume goes on at the beginning of the night and comes off at close. Not an issue.

I really like how you posed these to your actors. Would you mind sharing their results?

                1) Looking Cool/Scary
Having an impressive appearance is, for me, most important. I'm here to entertain/scare the customers, and because of that, I want to look my best (or worst as the case may be) for the show.

                2) Mobility
Wearing an outfit that makes my movements stiff and rigged tends to effect my performance. Be it catching up to someone, moving to different positions on the fly, or executing a simple "surprise" scare, I want to be quick and able. Visibility also plays a part in my mobility. Masks that I've purchased and used in the haunt, always had 1 or both eye holes cut larger to help me see better (if they were cut really big, I just glued mesh material in the eye socket to hide my real eye(s)). It's already dark in the haunt. Only being able to see through a tiny slit makes things worse. I need to see in order locate people, move freely/quickly during a scene/scare, and not be prone to tripping.

                3) Ability To Be Heard
I can expect to have a somewhat muffled voice when wearing a mask or a certain prosthetic, that isn't too bad. However, I don't want my voice to be so muffled that jerks who say my costumes "looks stupid" can't hear my quip.

                4) Comfort
There's nothing comfortable about wearing a latex mask for extended periods to begin with really. Even with extra vents in the mask, you can still find yourself sweaty and exhausted after a long night. But that's something one can overcome easily with time; I did. Everything else that could make one uncomfortable when wearing a costume (itchy material, mask that digs into the neck) can easily be fine-tuned and fixed.

                5) Ease of Taking Off and Putting On
Since this takes place before and after the show, there should be plenty of time to do both. No worries.

Nice. No slouches here. This is great because it is more than just a job. Seeing the order these are being placed in shows you take pride in what you do and will make sacrifices to provide a great time for others.
Now if we can all work at one haunt together

Wow. I just thought of something. Like an All Star haunt. lol. Hand picked actors from across the US. That would be awesome

I have a few more answers coming in still but the results are about what I expected. This year my theme is "the infestation" so they are all bug type of costumes Depending on how I make them will depend on my actors responses.
I will post my crews results after I get them all.
