Putting a haunt in a historic place?

Does anyone have experience with putting a haunt in a historic site or similar? I have been hired to design a haunt and train the actors that's at a fairly well known historic site. The directors want a really good haunt but have to deal with the fact that not a lot of things can be disturbed. They've had a small haunt there for the past 2 years (mixed results) but want to expand it on a much larger scale.

They want to incorporate some of the character of the site into the haunt, but be respectful of the fact that people did die there in battle. It's going to be a fine line between creating a really good quality haunt while not offending some of the locals who may not be enthused about this event growing.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I don't think it's the right time to reveal what site it is, but needless to say, it's a doozy. When the time is right, (ie: we've negotiated a deal and signed all the papers), I'll let everyone know what it is.

I believe I have been in contact with one of the folks you are trying to help. My suggestion was to use the site as a facade and build a freestanding haunt with the feel of being the real place I was also leaning toward not basing the theme on history of the place.

Our haunt is on a historical homestead in the state of Ohio. We have not changed the structures and also did fascades, but we have one barn in which we use and still have addressed all the life issues in the building. The one main issue that we deal with is I do controll the number of actors and visitors that enter the barn at one given time.
