  • charity trouble opinions please

Well, I will not officially be with a charity because i refused to gurantee them 6000 dollars. Is this something that you have to gurantee all charities you work with? has anyone here dealt with this problem. As a result i will just take half of my net proceeds and donate them to different area charities without using any names

    please post opinions

    Out of curiosity,
Were you trying to be a charity haunt to get the benefits? Like volunteer labor, name recognition, advertising help, donations of lumber and such, tax breaks, or did you just want to give them money. I might recommend trying a college cause as opposed to an official charity that way you would gain some degree of exposure to both a target audience as well as target actors, in some cases the donation is still tax deductible.

I assume they understand by using their name is how you get volunteers to help make the money in the first place.
This is how we do it too, but I have never had any of them say I cant use their name.
sounds like its time to move on.

other ideas, Band Boosters, volunteer fire dept., local relay for life, for a few years we even did a local Catholic school that needed money. Another year we did it for my sister that had breast cancer(shes doing great now by the way). We usually use the term "fund raiser"

In this litigious society we live in many charities are having to protect themselves from lawsuits, now I am in way impugning you or your haunt but our industry does pay some very high premiums and there is still a stigma applied to what we do, although it is getting better. I have been asked to help with school haunts in the past and its always the first thing they make sure of is that its not too scary.

We have done a few diffrent charities in the past check with the Jaycee's if they are not running a haunt they may be a good choice, school bands are huge, volunteer fire departments are another good choice and are always looking for money if there are any close by.

LOL I was on the phone with client and just now finished up and see that I was scooped on my suggestions LOL you snooze you lose

My haunt, Hall of Horrors, is put on every year by the Jaycees. All proceeds go directly to the S.C. Jaycee Camp Hope and other charitable causes...We've been doing it for MANY years, so our proceeds are in the thousands, but still, that money goes to charities and back into the haunt. So you just gotta know what you're in haunting for.

Local Optimist Clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Foundations, downtown improvement corporations, Red Cross, United Way (go there and look for other organizations specifically)

When we were looking for a venue, we talked to people from our towns animal shelter, and they needed funds for a new shelter building. We gained tremendous support from the town, and got town land to use for the event. Sometimes it is better to be on the towns side anyway.

Sitting down with the selectmen was positive as well, because we went in saying we want to RAISE money for the town animal shelter, in a time when town government is so strapped for cash. Let's just say they helped us out.

                            Charity Problem

Its seems rather odd that a charity would want you to garantee them $6,000. Usually they are happy just recieving any kind of donation.

Another issue that comes to mind is if you would be asking for financial assistance from them, that they would want to make sure they are not only getting their investment back, but making something as well.

The charity haunt I volunteer for is for the Boys & Girls Club of Sparta WI. The haunt is overseen by the club director and board members. In a sence, we are working for them, we make NOTHING. But the club sets aside a few thousand for the haunt to rebuild each year.

The B&G Club have been pretty good to work for. Maybe see if your community has one.

...I agreed. It did seem a bit strange.

                              BUT...

I would REALLY like to hear some good news, rather than post after useless post of "maybe"..."we will"..."we're supposed to"..."probably be official"..."most likely"

Something in the back of my head (as well as other forum members) was telling me that this haunt just ISN'T going to happen for 2009. I mean. Let's be honest. Here it is August. At this point, unless you have ALL your sh*t together orrrr you've got some prefab haunt you're ready to throw up, it just isn't goin to happen. You have advertising to do, I assume still construction and finding actors...just to name A FEW things. There are sooooo many more logistics that need to be taken care of.

That was my two cents...that I've been holding back for a few weeks now...but at any rate...all I can say at this point is BEST OF LUCK!!! ha
