  • And they say they army does more in the morning than most people do all day...

So at 7:00 am I was finishing up yesterdays crop of tombstones. Since several others have asked about foam coating I thought I would post a few pics.
The stones are carved from styrofoam 3" thick EPS purchased from a TX company called powerfoam (they have offices in other states too! 4'x8' sheets 3" thick cost $12 each. I bought enough foam to make 60+ tombstones for my graveyard this year, this is the first 20 mid process. These stones will get detail painting and a polyurethane coat with UV protectant. They were cut with a hotwire foam factory wire saw and then "aged" with a heat gun and a wood rasp, the lettering was added with a soldering iron I bought from the dollar store (yes they die after a month but I buy ten at a time, if they get gunky then I chuck them). I tried to cover all bases but if you have question please ask.

Here is the coating I use, they premix the color for me and It costs $70 a bucket

The spray rig is similar to a wall texture hopper it costs $100 for the hopper and you of course need a compressor

trying to do this in four pictures.....
Coated stones, dries in two or so hours and cures in 24, but you can work with it as soon at its dry.

20 down and 42 to go, but the fun ones are coming up these are the filler tombstones. All these have actual old epitaphs but with changed names out of deference to the dead. I got some of the epitaphs from
    http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/epitfs.htm
    Hope this helps somebody,

      "Tombstones?" I'm lazy.

When I wanted to show my patrons tombstones I just went up on the next hill and videoed my Great-great-grandfather's 18 foot tall stone and showed it to them on my tv.
Then I videoed the smaller stone that says "Jim Warfield" on it, a subtle thing maybe telling them this is a real haunted, haunted house!
Of course I could only make this video in the winter when snow could be packed on the lettering hiding the wrong middle initial..since it's not my marker and I didn't die in 1953, but then maybe someof you all ready guessed it.
I did build a tomb in the backyard. I started with a 1963 homemade 4 horse horse trailer, delivered to my backyard for $65.00 (total cost) I cut off the axles, cut off the end so people could walk out of it and laid up soft 1870 Mt. Carroll bricks, dead-ringers for the ones used in New Orleans above-ground crypts. I made the bricks arch and made a heavy steel door from scrap steel on a big hinge , I welded together from pipe and steel bars.
The vines that cover the house also make their way to the backyard and wrap around the tomb, the backyard maze and anything else that doesn't keep moving.
In the fall when all the leaves fall from the vine it looks like veins and arteries all over the place.
I guess they sort of are?

              Danglin,
(thanks Jim now I feel dirty typing that)
I purchased mine from Don's building supply in Dallas TX. Many stucco supply companies will carry this so Im sure you can find it local. I got the hopper and the mix from them.

3" foam in TEXAS?!? Shweeet! Is the density of the foam like the blue and pink stuff or is it more like the white bead foam?

I'm only a little over an hour from Dallas and have no problem driving for 3" foam at $12/sheet.

It is EPS, but it is more dense than most EPS. about like the blue.
                  http://www.powerfoam.net/
Here is their website. I got mine cut down the middle (a reasonable amount of cutting is free) so I had sheets that were 8' long by 2'wide easier for my hotwire tools to handle.
the foam is in Midlothian TX, just south of Dallas. Their warehouse is awesome, a walmart sized building piled to the roof with giant 4'x4'x16' blocks of foam all standing on end. I would hate to live near there if the place ever catches fire.

                    Up date
here are a few pics of the finished stones.

the angels on the stones are from the dollar store, they are hot glued on and just painted to match. the stones were given a wash of very weak black paint and I airbrushed the carvings to emphasize the letters. the last thing i do is coat them with a UV protectant polyurethane through an HVLP sprayer.

Nice tombstones Allen. If you used a projector or overhead you could get your epitaphs perfect. Dont know if you have access to one sometimes there hard to find. They look good though.

                        Yeah Damon,
Your right, I tend to be a getitdoneist as opposed to a perfectionist. I should take a little more time on things, but I love to get them done and off my table. When I need something perfect I take the time (or call for help), but normally dim lights are my friend

I want an overhead projector after I'm buried, I know it will be poor-man's "Cable or satellite" but if there is no monthly bill ....Is there a graveyard close to where all of those "Girls Gone Wild" videos?
