Noisemaker suggestions

The "ghost ship" (Battleship USS North Carolina) I'm working with is looking for ideas on how to make loud noises without damaging any of the paint on the steel walls and plating.

I'm thinking rubber mallets could make really good noisemakers and will not crack any of the paint (it's a state war memorial so damages have to be minimal)

Any alternatives or suggestions? I don't know how much money they have to spend but I know they probably would like some other ideas before buying out the local hardware stores..

I've used:

-Shakers/Maracas
-Whip cracks (2 2"x4" hinged together)
-Old Cymbals
-Cowbells
-Metal Trash cans and lids
-twirl party noisemakers (http://www.partycheap.com/Black_and_...80230-bkgd.htm)
-Metal barrels
-Empty beer kegs w/ hammer/lead pipe/baseball bat
-Pneumatic presses
-Attach sheet metal and hit with ANYTHING (especially the pneumatic press)
-animal calls

... and you can't count out speakers with loud noises. Hope this helps! -Tyler

put a sock over the rubber mallets so they do not leave black streaks on the paint

Take your foot out of the sock.
Don't use underware or it might leave brown streaks on the paint.
A really strange noise can be made by blowing through a gas appliance flexible connector.
The sound is sort of like a bagpipe whine and a flute..? Nasilly too.
Different lengths and diameter flexible conectors can make various ranges and types of sound.

If the ship’s intercom system is still intact, maybe you could make a tape loop of radio distress calls filled with static to play through the entire ship. Also, you could try to find the sound effect of metal twisting and groaning. I know that if I was deep in the bowels of a ship and heard that, it would freak me out.

Yeah twisting and groaning of ships always get ppl on edge at least me u cold have hidden speakers that ppl could be talking ( a recording) of whisperd or moffeled voices like there are people on the other side of the wall, perhaps screaming i u might not want to do that b/c of what happened to many shipmen at pearl harbor or any sea battles for that fact, umm you can make simple shakers out of beans and coffe cans if they still have metal ones u know, ummm I have seen actors have hammers and meatal sheets that they carry perhaps chains or in this case um you could get old bullet shells rattlin um water dripping if there is a part with the gally perhaps a chef with a metak spoon/ pot

Well this is really simple!

The best noise makers out there can be achieved by slow cooking any good dried bean, white beans or great northern, pinto beans works great, baked beans works too! Wanna really add a twist to it try eating some pickled eggs with your beans! Shane and its thats the best noise maker out there! Shane this time.

That actually reminds me of thunder tubes which are another good noise maker

Whistle
air horn (the kind with the screw on cans of air) Short blast will last all night (Walmart)
shaker can (soup can, make a slot, clean it out, fill with some washers, tape over)
novelty noise makers (I have a key chain that makes 6 fart sounds)
balloons (you can pop them ) a clown did this to me once and Halloween Horror Nights

Note, don't crack your wife in the back of the head with one of the "hard" mallets. It may be hard, her fist is harder....
