They are the masterminds behind the Decapitation Station featured earlier this month at Bradley Farms garden center in Southport. For $10, people were photographed holding the heads of loved ones. They also could be zombies or simply put themselves in a Halloween-themed snapshot.
Mary, a photographer and single mother, and Anna came up with the idea last year. It was a way for them to make a few extra dollars for Christmas.
“My daughter is an art major, and I’m a photographer. We wanted to come up with something fun that we don’t already have an app for,” Mary said. “I saw one decapitated head in a photo on Google and it piqued my interest. We played around with it a bit and found something that worked.”
Mary snaps the photographs and Anna, a student at Corning Community College, handles the graphics.
They started doing the portraits at Bradley Farms last year, but the idea didn’t gain too much popularity until this year. Mary thinks shows like AMC’s smash hit, “The Walking Dead,” about a world overrun by zombies, have helped her.
“Our slogan is ‘Decapitation Station: First we shoot you, then we cut off your head,’” Mary said. So far, Mary and Anna — with some help from Mary’s son Brady — have “decapitated” about 100 people.
Mary has been a regular fixture at Bradley Farms through the years. She’s always painted pumpkins and helped out with daytime activities. “We’re really hoping to be at Bradley Farms next October for even more creative portrait ideas,” she said.
If you missed your chance at Bradley Farms this year, don’t worry. Mary’s portraits were so popular, she’s offering the frightening images for the winter holidays.
Mary calls her zombie-themed family portraits, “Have yourself a scary little Christmas.” They began as a fun idea for a friend.
She’ll do those portraits out of the studio in her Wellsburg home.
“I really enjoy creating these pictures, and love that it’s something I can do with my kids,” Mary said. “The zombies have carried on because of the Christmas card.”
