On 85 year old house in Sussex, New Brunswick appears to be a cozy home with a garden out front for the home owner to enjoy. Generations and generations of one family lives there since the house was built and never had anything but positive experiences in the home. But one early morning a woman was awakened by an unbearable, uncomfortable coldness. She thought that perhaps the woodstove wasn’t working properly so she went downstairs to check it out. Sure enough the woodstove had gone out, so she had to light it again. As soon as she lit the woodstove again, the fire started and she saw a small figure in the woodstove.
The figure was small, red and begged the woman to help him. The woman described the figure as a small, devil-like figure. She wiped her eyes because she thought for sure what she had seen wasn’t right. But she still saw the figure. She went to the bathroom and threw cold water on her face to wake up. When she returned the figure was still there tempting her. She took a stick and tried to poke the figure but the stick just went right through it. The woman thought for sure that she had gone crazy and could find no explanation for this odd experience. She shut the door of the woodstove and went back upstairs to go to bed.
Over the next few weeks there were drastic temperature changed throughout the house. The woman would wake up at night and feel so hot that she couldn’t even breathe. Sometimes the heat was so bad, she would vomit in response to it. The man upstairs often went on business trips so she could never ask him for help. Sometimes when he was gone, she would hear the music blaring upstairs. This frightened her. The opera and bagpipe music would blare upstairs when she knew better and knew that no one was up there.
Finally the woman realized that she had to leave. But when she was packing her things to move, her things would unpack themselves at night. All the work she had done the day before would be undone. Eventually she became so scared that she just left the house and all of her belongings and never returned. Today the house remains unoccupied and if you look through the windows, you’ll still see the woman’s things strewn about the way it was the day she left.
