St. Louis, Missouri Haunt - Lemp Brewery Haunted House By Hauntworld Magazine
These days we have over 800 televised channels with shows for every flavor, but oddly enough some of the hottest aired shows are those about ghost hunting. Each year, more and more shows tell the tale of ghost hunters and their eerie excursions to chase down the paranormal. Do spirits actually communicate from the beyond? Can a spirit actually move items? How much do you believe?
What determines whether a building is haunted? When a person dies in a house, does that automatically make the place haunted? Is it a murder, a suicide, or an unexplained death that makes a building haunted? ...How about FIVE deaths in one mansion with nearly all supposedly being by their own hand. Would that make a building haunted? The Lemp family truly qualifies as one of America's most haunting ghost stories, with much scrutiny on the seemingly possessed Lemp Mansion.
Built in the 1860’s, The Lemp Mansion was home to the Lemp family and located next to their family business, The Lemp Brewery. By 1870, Lemp Brewery was the largest brewing company in St. Louis, dominating the beer trade until prohibition closed the plant in 1919. By that time, the family had already endured one heart failure death (Frederick Lemp at the mysterious age of 28) and one suicide (William Lemp Sr). From 1919-1949, five more deaths/suicides occurred. In 1920 just days after her marriage and with her husband in the next room, Elsa Lemp supposedly took her own life with a gunshot to the chest, but left behind no suicide note. The Lemps called their doctor, an attorney and the coroner without ever notifying the police. The police weren’t involved until at least 2 hours after her death. In 1922 after selling off the Lemp Brewery complex at auction, William Lemp Jr. ended his own life inside the mansion office with a shot to his heart. Again, no note was left behind. Then in 1943, William Lemp III died of heart failure at the age of 42. William’s un-named, illegitimate child died inside the mansion somewhere around mid to late 1940’s. In 1949, Charles Lemp committed suicide in his mansion bedroom after shooting his dog in the basement. Knowing several other Lemp suicides remained suspect, Charles left a note with only the words, “In case I am found dead, blame it on no one but me.” Following his brother’s death, Edwin Lemp sold the mansion and it became used as a boarding home. Then in 1970, the final death of Edwin Lemp at age 90 ended the family line. It’s believed Edwin lived as long as he did ONLY because he sold the mansion and left the evil behind.
Although the Lemp Mansion gets most of the press, many suspect it was the cursed business that drove several of the Lemp Family to suicide or other ill fate. The Lemp Mansion and Brewery were connected by a series of underground tunnels and caverns, called The Caves of St. Louis. Years ago, this natural cave system provided the perfect temperature for aging beer. The Lemps would also use these caves of stone arches and gothic walls to walk to work each day. Today, it’s a horrific haunting experience like no other.
The Lemp Brewery Dynasty is one of the greatest ghost stories in documented history of the paranormal, but the real and truly scary place in this story is the Brewery itself and the caves underneath. We recently took a tour of Lemp Brewery where Halloween Productions Inc. of St. Louis, Missouri has opened a haunted house. They acclaim this haunt to be the only REAL haunted house in America. The minute you arrive at the Lemp Brewery, you literally feel the history. The complex is well over 100 years old and fully rich with gothic gates, archways, buildings and more. As we near the entrance to the haunt, we are shocked to learn there’s only one way in, via a 100-year old freight elevator. Once you board the elevator you are taken down deep underground well-below the Brewery structure into a section that hasn't been seen by the public in nearly 100 years.
The freight elevator stops nearly 50 feet below street level, and we are reminded, “Underground, no one can hear you scream.” As the elevator doors rise up, we step into what is now known as The Lemp Brewery Haunted House. This haunted house is unlike anything we've ever seen before. Most haunted houses try very hard to create fake stone or castle looking walls, but inside the Lemp Brewery Haunted House everything is real, over 100 years real. With a gothic appearance, the place reminds me of an old European Dracula's Castle. It’s damp, musty, and oh so creepy.
The theme of the haunt highlights its dark history. The haunted house features state of the art animations, sets, props, sound effects and special effects. The lighting highlights the natural gothic look of the walls, ceilings and more. Old rusty pipes and worn down machines from a time long ago still remain. Tens of thousands of dollars of monsters, dead zombie gangsters, a massive animated alligator, creepy rats, bats, and long lost brewery workers of the dead come out to haunt inside The Lemp Brewery Haunted House. This attractions winds through several sections of the old brewery, spanning over 20,000 square feet of fear. To escape what lurks inside these tunnels and dark corners, you must climb a long staircase to exit out of what they call THE HOLE.
So is the Lemp Brewery Haunted House really haunted? If there were ever a place on Earth that is haunted, I think this would be it. I can't imagine a place more rich with haunted history. If Hollywood wanted to shoot a new monster movie or a subterranean horror flick, they wouldn't have to build a single set if filming inside this place. The Lemp Brewery Haunted House is one of the most unique and realistic haunts we've ever reviewed. If you’re a haunted house scream seeker looking to find one of the best haunted houses in the country or if you simply find yourself in the St. Louis area this fall, make sure you stop to scream at The Lemp Brewery Haunted House.

TERROR VISIONS is one of America's first 3D haunted houses ever created and is now regarded as the best 3D haunted house in America. Terror Visions is a 3D haunted house in St. Louis, Missouri located inside THE DARKNESS, one of the best haunted attractions in the World. The Darkness Haunted House is a two story haunted house filled with Hollywood quality sets, animations & special effects, located in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.
In 2009, our building was expanded with a new 16,000 square foot two-story addition, which now houses our workshop and both Terror Visions 3D and The Monster Museum. Originally, Terror Visions 3D was located at 19th and Washington Street and operated as a single haunted house in the mid 1990's. Terror Visions Haunted House on Washington Street later had its theme changed to Elvira Haunted House, but ultimately it closed for good. Several years went by without a 3D haunted house.
Eventually, Halloween Productions Inc (HPI) expanded their Darkness building downtown. The team from HPI wanted to add a second haunted house to The Darkness venue. Many ideas got kicked around until it was ultimately decided to bring back Terror Visions 3D. In addition to bringing back Terror Visions 3D Haunted House, it was decided to add a gift store and surround that with a monster museum.
The original Darkness was located in the old Welch Baby Carriage Factory on 7th Street in Soulard. The Darkness was housed on one entire floor of 36,000. The original Darkness included a 13-hole themed mini golf, an arcade, a movie theater, magic show stage, and even a monster museum. When HPI bought the building next door, The Darkness Haunted House was moved out of the Welch Factory and into the building right next door.
The new building, with only 20,000 square feet, was not large enough to house a mini golf, arcade, monster museum, & movie theater. So those attractions were sold and shipped outside of Missouri to other attraction companies.
Halloween Productions become a predominant production company building haunted houses, indoor blacklight mini golf attractions, dark rides, and more all across the World. In fact, a new company was started called Blacklight Attractions (BLA). BLA became (and still is) the World's best production company of blacklight attractions in the World. When the Darkness building was expanded it only made sense to bring back Terror Visions 3D because of Terror Visions’ history in the St. Louis area, plus the company’s current recognition for building the best 3D attractions Worldwide. After costing nearly 1 million dollars to expand the building and create the new attractions, Terror Visions and the Monster Museum opened in October 2009.
Terror Visions 3D Haunted House, now in its forth season, has evolved with each passing year. In the first season of this haunted house, it was mostly highlighted for its clown theme and amazing artwork. For the second season, this haunted attraction was renovated by adding tons more build-outs, sets and props, plus more sound fx. For 2012, Terror Visions 3D has reached an all new high with tens of thousands of dollars spent on custom animations, special effects, and the most hauntingly creative artwork scenes.
In the past, The Darkness Haunted House was the main attraction with the most elaborate build-outs and sets, but the objective for 2012 was to do the same for Terror Visions, and mission accomplished! A perfect example is the TNT room, whereby the entire room explodes after an animated clown detonates dynamite. Other incredible additions are the improvements to the queue room, whereby a multi-motion clown was added who tells jokes and insults the crowd. The biggest renovation to Terror Visions was in 2012 when over $100,000 was spent on new scenes, and one of kind never before seen special fx. One of the biggest addition was a multi motion Ice Scream truck which features two different screens showing clowns driving the truck while the other gives the illusion the truck is driving down the road. The new Ice Scream truck moves, shakes and vibrates while you walk through it... this effect was hailed by the haunted house industry during a tour in March 2012 as one of the most unique creations in haunted house history. Other new scenes and effects include a wacky funhouse room with funny mirrors, massive moving clowns, an attacking CLOWNZILLA animation, an over the top Jack N Box room and even a Mr Freeze Clown who blasts you with real frozen ice. The days of Terror Vision
being merely an add-on attraction of 3D mazes is over.
Terror Visions 3D Haunted House has been toured multiple times by owners of haunted houses nationwide and around the country and has been hailed as the best 3D haunted house in the industry. Are you ready to experience freaky crazed clowns, in a 3D environment where the walls appear to be moving, floors are floating and everything is right in your face? Your worst visions of terror are inside the World’s best 3D Haunted House, Terror Visions in 3D, inside The Darkness Haunted House.
In addition to bringing back Terror Visions 3D and making it part of The Darkness Haunted House, we also brought back the Monster Museum. The hardest part of rebuilding The Monster Museum was the lack of monsters available for purchase. Our team had to search high and low for cool monsters to display, and our aggressive search paid off! We found many cool items for the Monster Museum like a full-sized Creature From The Black Lagoon, Predator, Alien and more. We also acquired a massive, full-sized Incredible Hulk and a real suit created by Rick Baker from Disney's The Haunted Mansion movie. Every year, we attempt to find new monsters and props to display inside the museum.
For 2012, we contracted a company to custom build and create a full-sized Wolfman, Darkness from Legend and ever Boris Karlof. The Wolfman is based on the newest 2010 film from Universal. It’s quite impressive, and it’s on display now, inside The Monster Museum at The Darkness. Guests can use their cameras/phones to take action pictures with this amazing, larger-than-life sized prop! Additionally, you’ll find a Michael Jackson prop as the werewolf from the music video, Thriller, and a new, full-sized 'Darkness' from the movie Legend. In addition to the amazing monsters, The Monster Museum is also filled with classic toys, autograph memorabilia, signed movie posters, plus horror video games and pinball too!
The Monster Museum also includes a horror gift store operated by SLACKERS Music -Movies-Games where you can also purchase Darkness souvenir t-shirts, horror toys, collectibles, games, movies and more. When you come to The Darkness Haunted House, you get to tour one of the best haunted houses in America and simply the best 3D haunted house in the World, plus The Monster Museum for added fun! New to Gift Store includes Darkness 20th anniversery mugs, jackets, t-shirts, and even a 500 piece puzzle. Everything can be found at the exit of the all New Darkness gift store.
The team behind The Darkness invested millions of dollars as well as years of creativity to build these ultimate haunted attractions. It’s never been about money and profitsI. It’s about living out dreams and the love of Halloween and everything horror. To have the ability to be a kid every day using your imagination and seeing your ideas be enjoyed by thousands of people every Halloween…that’s what makes it all worth the while.
