Haunted Hotels & Inns of Vermont
With its rich history that dates back for more than three centuries, Vermont is the perfect place for ghost-hunting. Some of the state’s most haunted places happen to be quaint, historic inns and hotels that are certainly charming but allegedly inhabited by guests other than those who checked in at the front desk!
The Equinox Hotel – Manchester, Vermont
Built back in 1769, the Equinox Hotel has a long history of hauntings and stories of paranormal activity that have persisted for many years. While there are apparently several ghosts that haunt the hotel (as reported by several guests and staff members), the most popular one is that of Mary Todd Lincoln: the wife of President Abraham Lincoln.
In the summer of 1865, Mary and her children escaped the searing heat of Washington D.C. by traveling up to the Equinox Hotel. Unfortunately, tragedy struck that fateful summer when President Lincoln was assassinated.
Several employees at the hotel have claimed to see a ghost of a woman and a small child while on the third floor. Most of the sightings have lasted just a few seconds before the apparitions disappear. Based on old pictures of the Lincoln family taken at the hotel, the staffers are quite sure the ghosts they say were that of Mrs. Lincoln and one of her children.
The White House Inn – Wilmington, Vermont
The picturesque, historic White House Inn is said to be haunted by the ghost of Mrs. Martin Brown, a woman who was a frequent guest at the hotel years ago. Staff and guests have reported seeing her apparition, feeling enigmatic cold spots, and seen doors that mysteriously fly open.
The Inn also has creepy areas that some staff members swear are haunted including the empty, vast attic and the dungeon-like basement replete with coal boilers, several dark areas, and an old, hidden staircase.
The Brass Lantern Inn – Stowe, Vermont
The strange thing about the Brass Lantern Inn that sets it apart from other haunted hotels is several guests have come forward and reported the very same experience. Several different guests have reported while in their room hearing a group of people arriving late, laughing and talking as though they have just come from some kind of party or gathering. The next morning when the guests complain to the front desk about the loud group, they learn that there are no guests staying in the room that the noise seemed to originate from!
