Over the years the story has been changed and like many stories, a bit revised. The way I tell it is the truth and all facts. It was a rainy night and the year was 1735. A woman by the name of Leeds was pregnant, and about to give birth. She was gathered by many of the women from town. Many say they were there more out of curiosity than to help. It was rummered that Mother Leeds was into Withcraft and there was fear that her baby would be born a monster. The time came when the baby was born. At first the young child looked perfectly healthy and fine. A few moments had passed and the baby started changing, the child started changing into a horrible creature. It is said it had a head like a horse, a body like a snake and wings like a bat. As the beast kept growing in size everyone in the room become more terrified. Just then, the large beast started beating eveyone with it's huge, thick tail, including it's mother. A large scream or whinning noise is heard and then the beast is gone into the night. The legend goes that the Jersey Devil still roams the forest area in New Jersey attacking anything from crops, live animals and many say it has been spotted at the New Jersey shore. Located in Essex County is one of the more infamous mental institutions to ever be built in all Newark, New Jersey. The Essex County Hospital, which was originally named Overbrook Mental Institution began construction in the late 1800's. Over the next several years there will be massive violence, unexplained death which will eventually lead to the closing of the scariest house for the mentally and criminally insane forever. In 1917 there was a problem in the broiler room and what follwed was horrific tragedy. Over the next 20 days, there were 24 reported deaths from freezing to death and 32 more reports of patients having frost. During the Great Depression while so many people going financial and rough times, this led to the overcrowding of the Essex County. As time went on the care just became worse. Eventually in the year 2007 the Essex County Hospital was closed for good. After a century of despicible care and horrible values there were a reported 10,000 human deaths. In additional there are many ghost tours, and other real haunted house places throughout New Jersey.
