Most pro haunts probably use some version of CAD.
CadStd Lite 3.5.9 is a free version you can use for mechanical designs, house plans, blueprints, schematics, and charts. http://www.download.com/CadStd-Lite/...ml?tag=lst-5-6
However I really like Google's SketchUp, easy to use and learn for someone who is not familiar with CAD programs. http://www.sketchup.com/
SketchUp by Google. Definitely the way to go. Free download and easy to learn.. (I highly recommend you do the self guided tutorials provided).
This program is great to get the creative part of your brain going. When it's time for technicals for the "brass" to review.... you might want a little more sophisticated program.
But simply from a creative standpoint.... Great program.

My design program of choice is always Autocad. It's very pricey, so....I usually obtain it through methods I won't metion here, wink wink. But definetly a great program that can do anything you throw at it.....as long as you can afford it. Although I've never used it, I imagine the 3D modeling features of Autocad would also come in quite handy.
