Got some questions about air brushing..

-What is the BEST kit/set-up to use for air brushing make-up for haunts? Best make-up?

-Where can I find some good videos/books to assist me in learning air brushing?

-What's a normal cost for a kit and supplies? How much could I go through a season?

A lot of what you are asking is subjective and also an insane huge topic.


I am not an amazing airbrush artist but I have been using one to do fast makeup for the last six or seven years. I also trained about a dozen people running though the makeup room of CreaturesCrypt over my stay there.

Lets start with, you can do GOD work with an airbrush, haunts don't really allow that. For example these two girls are nothing special at all. But they wanted their role to be in makeup. All they do is lineup guests wearing a robe. So you can do what I did to them in maybe 2 -3 minutes end of the night fast blast faces. The point here is low light so they are not just people under the hood. Seriously, this is like a 3 minute job. You do them as they line up and run out. For places with tour guides you can do this kind of half-a@@ makeup on them and do 15+ in 45-60 minutes with even a newly trained makeup artists. http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/phot...93081_5834.jpg


...and of course its a good tool to add to your other makeup to break up your shit. It keeps you from just using a brush, or just using a sponge. Different tools force different styles from your hand.... http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/phot...93072_7354.jpg

Don't get me wrong, you can do great things with an airbrush. When you spend more time though, you usually use more than an airbrush.... If you want to see some creative airbrush work there were a few very tallented younger people working for Rocky Point Haunted House that did some very cool work. Their crew had a very nice shared style among them.

For a haunt I would say get at least three (to five) guns per artist. Most should be bottom feed as they store more liquid and I like at least one gravity feed gun as I think I detail better with one. The idea here is to not have to change colors often as it takes time to clean out the gun and transition and you don't have time with a haunt. Skip the gravity feed for people that are just blasting with stencil.

Buy a decent gun, don't spend a mint. Really you don't need to spend over $100 a gun. Get a decent oil free compressor w/tank that won't run all the time. Don't buy a crap airbrush compressor. Make sure you have at least one (maybe one inline per line) moisture traps.

For lessons type in Airbrush into Google. There are tons of tutorials out there now from dagger strokes to people showing off their flame and skull skills. Personally, I love the Javier Soto Killer Clowns DVD.

Your last question on consumables is related to the skill of your artists and the quality of product. I have been sick a single night and had three artists go through a seasons worth of makeup on a Saturday. We are talking a few gallons of Mehron. The only way to know for sure is to do some test makeups for what you want and get a guess on what you used.

I did not realize any haunts had a need to use pro pallets and spend that kind of money. I mean, its not for the guy on a budget. Even at a mid to small size event like CreaturesCrypt we would have gone through a hundred dollars plus of this a night at 12$ or more an ounce. Is this something you end having to use when you get to hotter Octobers further south? What event are you guys using this stuff for?

Well I have tried quite a few different airbrush mediums and I just don't feel that others cover very well. For example pick a yellow from Graftobian and then pick a yellow from temptu, and try to cover a face, completely cover it... It will take me 5 seconds and one shot with temptu. With Graftobian and others i have to keep spraying and spraying to finally cover the face, and even then its just a muted color in my opinion. Again I believe if you can afford it, go for it. Your absolutely correct its expensive but I think worth it overall.

dr0zombie, I know Headless Horseman uses temptu, I use to pal around with a makeup artist there, and she did some amazing work with temptu.

With all the guns out there and accessories it's easy for someone to get lost...as in me. I was wondering what guns people suggest and what accessories you recommend having. I am really interested in getting into airbrushing makeup and could use all the info yall are willing to offer.

I find thinned make up will eventually clog your airbrush and you will spend more time and aggravation cleaning it then just spending a few extra bucks on make up made for airbrushing. Just a personal opinion.

Makeup Artist Magazine has two great articles on air brush makeup in their back issues. It might be worth it to get these old issues.

Makeup Artist magazine is great. Has a lot of tips. they cover mainly film related and fashion makeup. They really try to make room for more special effects and gorey stuff from time to time. Their main office is just up the street from me here in Vancouver, WA.

As a suggestion, some may know, but just in case. Check out this site

www.theeffectslab.com is a makeup amd maskmaking related forum. alot of great info and pros on their always helpful and give great advice.

also check out HorrorShow magazine, its mainly a masking making mag. but has great tips on airbrushing as well.
