  • The Halloween Expo - Denver

I have been contacted by several people about the Halloween Expo in Denver, and questioned about our involvement with the event.

I wanted to take a minute to make this post for the haunt community, comment on what I know, and try to eliminate any confusion.

We are not affiliated with the Halloween Expo in any way. The organizers are Joey Jensen and her husband Chad Scharf. I didn't know either of them until recently when they announced their expo. We met with Joey a couple of times to discuss their plans, and determine if it was something that we wanted to be involved with as a sponsor or exhibitor.

It would seem that they have received less than a warm welcome from the haunt community, which I told Joey they might expect, but according to her, some of the responses have been down right mean. This is the information I am getting from her, I don't know first hand, but judging by some past responses about other events, I could see how it may be possible.

Here's what I know of their event. They are Halloween Enthusiasts and Advocates, especially for the independent costume shops. I have only met Joey in person, but she is very passionate about Halloween and the Halloween Expo. It would seem that the focus of their expo is to asist the smaller Halloween retailers, which in turn makes this show more of a business to consumer show, not business to business.

I understand that they have sent exhibitor packages out to the haunt industry vendors, as some of the haunt industry vendors sell direct to consumer as well. As I said, they have received very mixed responses, but what troubles me is the mean spirited and unprofessional responses they claim they have received from some in our industry.

Don't get me wrong, I have shared some of the same concerns that some of you may have (wrong time of year, unrealistic expectation of attendance, etc) however, I have tried to do so in a professional manner.

It seems to me that Joey and Chad are committed to doing this expo, whether this September or some time in the future, and that attacking them in an unprofessional manner is uncalled for. They are no different than any of us, and are starting a business that they are passionate about.

As far as our involvement with the expo, we have let them know that we will help in any way we can to make the expo successful, we have nothing to gain by a "Halloween" themed event in our market failing. However, at this time, we are not involved, and any possible involvement in the future will be limited to a "wait and see" game time decision, meaning, if they put together an expo that looks like it will bring in attendance in our market that we would like to get our message out to, we will likely advertise at their expo through some from of sponsorship to be determined.

Well said Chris. I agree. The industry tends to be so clicky it gets aggravating often.

I wish them success and have spoken to them too over the last few weeks.
