We are working on an idea to try to create a claustrophobia type effect using a parachute material and an industrial fan. Do you think this will work?

I know of 2 haunts that used parachute material and the blowers
that carpet cleaners use to dry carpet (they are the same type
that they use for a bounce house) It worked out fine for them.Gary

You want to make sure you use rip-stop nylon if possible. This way if someone pokes a hole in the fabric, it won't continue to tear and your walls will still inflate.

Claustrophobia effect
The claustrophobia idea will be an excellent effect for your haunt. Some of the haunters I work with used that effect a couple of years ago and it went over very well.
Instead of using the parachute material they just used a couple of those blue colored tarps to form a hallway through a small room. I dont recall exactly how big of a fan they used but it wasnt nearly as big as the carpet dryer fan mentioned.
The tarp held up very well. Just make sure its securely ancored and sealed around. The patrons loved it. Well, some did! ha
Good luck
