Winding down Riverdale Road, the screams of passed souls echo through the trees as the fog lingers and the darkness takes over the night. Legend has it, several deaths occurred on this stretch of pavement dating back to the 1800’s and the ghosts were left behind. Each October, these souls seem to join the crew at The Haunted Field of Screams bringing the most chilling haunt experience of your life.

The Haunted Field of Screams is Denver’s LARGEST haunted attraction with over 35 acres of haunted cornfield and 3 separate haunted house attractions. Located just 15 minutes from downtown Denver, the Haunted Field of Screams provides the most unique and bone-chilling haunt for The Mile-High City.

Started in 2001, the Haunted Field of Screams began as a small family affair. With the idea of creating an outdoor haunted attraction on a 5-acre cornfield, part owner, Gina Palombo, designed the maze along with the help of her younger brother, Joe Palombo.

That first year, the family drew up a design by hand, cut the design into the cornfield and opened the haunted attraction in Thornton, Colorado. With less than 10 employees and no hired actors, the October 2001 scare season took off and the Haunted Field of Screams was an instant success, as it got more attention than the family expected.

The years following, part owner, and eldest brother Mark Villano joined the team and the Haunted Field of Screams continued to grow in both size and complexity. Mark was vital to the growth of the haunted attractions as he introduced power, animatronics, and creative sound elements making the cornfield come alive with interactive haunted experiences and special effects. With these added elements, this outdoor scare attraction was able to add indoor haunt elements and create a more complex haunt experience.

Hundreds of actors from the Rocky Mountains region were integrated into the haunted cornfield experience throughout the year to create a terrifyingly unexpected trip through the corn. Two other attractions were also added to make the Haunted Field of Screams the largest and most horrific haunt experience around.

Currently, there are three attractions: the main attraction, The Haunted Field of Screams, plus Dead Man’s Night Maze and Zombie Paintball Massacre.

The Haunted Field of Screams traps you in a horrific cornfield that contains all your worst nightmares. Guided solely by the moonlight, the daunting 16 foot tall cornstalks surround you on the trail and contain pure terror around every corner.

All your worst fears and phobias become reality as you journey through the scariest cornfield and encounter themed areas that will test your every senses, creating a complete nightmare from start to finish.

Dead Man’s Night Maze is a revived version of the original corn maze haunt. With wrong turns, never-ending pathways and dead ends, getting lost is easy, yet NOT your biggest fear. Endless monsters, attacking zombies and other nightmares will be stalking you every step of the way. As you journey deeper into the darkness of this haunted corn maze, no one will come to find you, but don’t worry… You won’t be alone!

The Zombie Paintball Massacre may seem like your typical moonlight hayride, but quickly turns into a fast-paced adventure of survival. Zombies have invaded the cornfield and are on the prowl for some human brains. The zombie apocalypse is on! It’s up to you and a high-powered paintball gun to fight off the real zombies and save yourself. You won’t be shooting blanks and the zombies won’t be standing still, so get ready for the ride of your life in this fun-filled, action-packed, haunted adventure!

One of the greatest challenges Mark, Gina, and Joe encounter on a yearly basis is setting up the haunt. While the location doesn’t change, the corn must be grown naturally and unobstructed from things like houses, facades and large props. The corn is planted in May, cut to design in June, and left uninterrupted to grow dauntingly tall and thick until just after Labor Day. In only three weeks all three haunts are built from the ground up.

Every part of all three attractions is rebuilt every year inside this giant cornfield within a very short amount of time. While this puts a strain on the building timeline, Joe says it also has some advantages. “We don’t get to build and add detail to our haunt throughout the year. However, by building from the ground up every year, we get the opportunity to create unique haunts each year. The Haunted Field of Screams has never, and will never have the same layout, props, themes, rooms, houses, etc. from the prior year.”

Customers come back each year knowing they won’t be able to predict which lurking monster is waiting behind each corner.

This year, the costumes, props and scares are better than ever. As new themes, scares and haunted technology are integrated into all three attractions the ultimate scare experience is ensured.

The acting cast, which is the largest in the state at over 120 actors, is now growing even larger. From zombies, to clowns, to asylum patients, the Haunted Field of Screams presents anyone’s worst nightmare at the largest scale.

The haunt will begin from the moment you set foot on the haunted property as there will be more stilt men, monsters lurking through the line, chainsaws, electrocution men, clowns, paintball zombies and a few more surprises.

Joe believes his haunted venue provides the scariest of locations simply because it’s a cornfield. “Overgrown cornfields are inherently scary,” says Joe. And, I couldn’t agree more!
