1) Erebus Haunted Attraction
Pontiac, Michigan
hauntedpontiac.com

Erebus Haunted Attraction - Pontiac, Michigan

Ranked #1 Haunted Attraction in America for 2026, Erebus Haunted Attraction is a legendary four-story journey into fear that has been terrifying guests for nearly 30 years.

Located in Downtown Pontiac, Michigan, Erebus takes guests through more than a half-mile of indoor horror featuring massive sets, elaborate environments, cutting-edge special effects, immersive scenes, and live actors. Guests don't simply watch the scares unfold—they become part of the experience as they navigate one of the most ambitious haunted attractions in the country.

For nearly three decades, Erebus has built its reputation on innovation, constantly evolving with new effects, technology, scenes, and unexpected encounters. Every turn brings something different, keeping guests guessing about what could be waiting next.

Just steps away, Erebus Escape has been recognized as the #1 Escape Room in Metro Detroit, giving visitors a completely different kind of challenge. Rather than relying on scares, Erebus Escape puts teams inside immersive environments where they must solve puzzles, uncover clues, and work together against the clock to find their way out.

Together, the two attractions make Erebus a destination for both Halloween enthusiasts and fans of immersive entertainment. Whether you're looking to test your nerve inside a four-story haunted attraction or test your wits in an escape room, Erebus offers two distinctly different experiences in the heart of Downtown Pontiac.

With #1 honors at both the national haunted-attraction level and the local Metro Detroit level, Erebus has become a destination worth putting on your Halloween travel list.

2) The Dent Schoolhouse
Cincinnati, Ohio
dentschoolhouse.com

Cincinnati, OH - The Dent Schoolhouse celebrates 30 Seasons of Screams in 2026.

Set inside a schoolhouse built in 1894, Dent brings its infamous legend to life through cinematic scenes, original characters, and a cast of monsters. At the center of it all is Charlie McFree, the murderous janitor rumored to have hidden missing students in the basement.

Guests follow Charlie’s story through corrupted classrooms, sinister hallways, the Basement of Nightmares, Zobo’s Back Lot Carnival, and an industrial meat plant. This year, Dent has rebuilt half of the schoolhouse basement and added a new finale infested with spiders and werewolves. A fully upgraded audio system makes the music and every approaching scare—harder to escape.

There’s a new face stalking the halls, too. Mr. Shady is a towering boogeyman surrounded by smoke, with an unnatural shadow that seems to have a mind of its own. He joins Dent’s cast of characters for a milestone season filled with renovated scenes and fresh scares.

Outside the schoolhouse, the included Monster Midway keeps the Halloween night going. Guests can meet roaming monsters, pose for more than seven free interactive photo opportunities, try mini escape games, and explore the Cincinnati Haunted House Museum. Seasonal food, new 30th-anniversary merchandise, and the Spooky Shop round out the visit.

Opening Friday, September 11, Dent is ready to prove once again why Halloween Lives Here.

3) Haunted Overload
Lee, New Hampshire
hauntedoverload.com

Lee, NH - Haunted Overload turns a walk through the woods into something larger than life.

Towering figures rise above the trail, strange shapes emerge from the trees, and the forest itself becomes part of the show. Built by hand with a striking eye for scale, this New Hampshire haunt makes you feel small long before anything steps out of the dark.

The experience unfolds outdoors, where each turn reveals another scene worked into the natural setting. Massive sculptures and creatures made from reclaimed materials give Haunted Overload its unmistakable look. Fog, sound, and carefully placed lighting draw your attention deeper into the woods and then leave you wondering what you missed behind you.

There’s an artistry to the fear here. Haunted Overload gives its scenes room to breathe, letting the setting build suspense before its performers close the distance. One moment you’re studying a towering creation overhead; the next, you’re very aware of how much darkness surrounds the path. That mix of craftsmanship and live scares makes the journey feel different from a traditional haunted house.

Haunted Overload has earned its place among the Top 13 Haunted Attractions by creating a world guests can walk into, rather than simply watch. Follow the trail through Lee’s haunted woods, look up at what’s waiting above you, and try to remember that the way out is somewhere ahead.

4) Fear Factory SLC
Salt Lake City, Utah
fearfactoryslc.com

Salt Lake City, UT - Fear Factory turns a historic industrial site into a towering maze of nightmares.

Once a cement factory, the property was abandoned in 1887 and later reborn as one of Utah’s most ambitious Halloween attractions. Its six haunted buildings, six-story tower, and two underground tunnels spread across more than 100,000 square feet, giving guests plenty of room to get lost and plenty of reasons to wish they hadn’t.

The factory’s past is part of the fear. Its story draws on documented deaths at the site and a legend of basement murders, a freak lightning storm, and a monstrous “beating heart” that now powers the horrors inside. Guided, or perhaps led astray by the eerie caretaker Karl Mossman, visitors move through buildings and basements built to test their nerves.

Darkness, tight spaces, dizzying heights, botched surgeries, chemical spills, and a swamp that threatens to swallow you are all part of the journey. More than 140 actors and nightly staff bring the factory to life with detailed makeup, costumes, and original characters. With over 16 flights of stairs and overlooks into the industrial space, even moving from one scene to the next can feel like a challenge.

Guests looking to catch their breath can visit Dark Spirits Bar for themed drinks in a haunted setting. But once you step back into the factory, the question remains: can you conquer what’s waiting inside?

5) Georgetown Morgue Haunted Attraction
Seattle, Washington
seattlehaunts.com

Seattle, WA - For nearly two decades, Georgetown Morgue has invited visitors into one of the city’s darkest stories.

Set in Seattle’s historic Georgetown district, the attraction draws on the building’s past as a funeral preparation facility and crematorium. Its most chilling legend tells of nine staff members who were forced into the crematorium and never seen again.

The scares begin before guests reach the door. Roaming performers work the outside of the property, setting the mood for what waits inside. From there, visitors pass through the Morgue’s dark, detailed scenes, where live actors, lighting, sound, and special effects make it difficult to know which shadows are safe. Professional makeup and costumes bring the characters close enough to make every encounter feel personal.

Georgetown Morgue keeps changing its scenes and scares, giving returning visitors fresh reasons to test their nerves. And the main attraction isn’t the end of the night: guests can take on the Dark Maze or try two five-minute escape games for another quick challenge.

For those who need a break between scares, the property also has concessions and exclusive Georgetown Morgue merchandise. But the story that brought you here has a way of sticking with you. Step inside the Morgue, follow the path through its past, and see what or who is still waiting in the dark.

6) The Darkness
St. Louis, Missouri
thedarkness.com

St. Louis, MO - The Darkness has been making visitors scream since 1994, and its 2026 season brings another journey through one of America’s most elaborate haunted attractions.

Spread across two floors, the scream park packs three haunted mazes with detailed sets, immersive scenes, special effects, more than 200 animated monsters, and live actors ready to catch guests off guard.

The experience starts outside, where roaming monsters and photo opportunities set the mood before visitors enter. Inside, each maze brings another wave of creatures and scares. The Darkness has drawn horror fans from around the world and appeared across television and online videos, but there’s only one way to find out how its monsters look up close.

There’s more to explore after the mazes. Guests can visit the horror museum, try mini escape rooms, find the secret horror bar, and browse a large horror retail store. Next door, St. Louis Escape offers eight escape rooms, retro mini golf, and a pinball arcade, enough to make a full night of it.

Visitors looking for even more fear can head to The Darkness’s sister attraction, Creepyworld Screampark, about 15 miles away. With a haunted hayride, eight haunted mazes, and a jack-o’-lantern festival, it gives thrill seekers another reason to make St. Louis a stop on their 2026 Halloween road trip.

7) Hellsgate Haunted House
Lockport, Illinois
hellsgate.com

Chicagoland, IL - HellsGate Haunted House begins deep in the woods, where finding the mansion is only the first challenge. Guests follow haunted trails, cross a zombie-filled cemetery, and slip through a cabin before reaching the house itself. Inside, secret passages lead through more than 40 rooms, down a slide into a basement laboratory, and toward a face-to-face encounter with dragons.

HellsGate calls it an adventure, and the journey earns the name. More than 150 live actors inhabit the trails and mansion, turning the route into an experience that can last up to 45 minutes. Each new space changes the pace: one moment you’re watching the trees for movement; the next, you’re searching for a way through the house while its residents close in.

After the final scare, guests can stay for the Monster Midway. Bonfires, food and drinks, midway games, and roaming characters keep the night going outdoors. There’s also a gift shop, the Monster Movie Screen, and the Witch’s Wagon, a five-minute escape room for anyone ready to take on one more challenge.

With its winding route through the woods and a mansion full of surprises, HellsGate gives visitors far more than a walk through a haunted house. Gather your crew, follow the trail, and Take the Adventure.

9) Headless Horseman Hayrides & Haunted Attractions
Ulster Park, New York
headlesshorseman.com

New York - Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Attractions invites guests onto 65 acres where HORROR LIVES HERE.

Set around a historic eighteenth-century stone house, the experience brings together a theatrical hayride, haunted houses, a corn maze, and walking trails. Its signature horse and rider reflect owners Michael and Nancy Jubie’s love of horses and give visitors a sight they won’t soon forget.

For 2026, the hayride ventures into The Cursed Earth of Crow Hollow, a new story for this season’s journey. Guests can also explore the new Crow Hollow Candy Company walking trail. Across the property’s 13 haunted attractions, trained actors, monsters, stunt performers, pyrotechnics, and illusions keep the story moving. A cast and crew of more than 250 brings it all to life, including a live horse and rider.

The night extends beyond the scares. Visitors can catch a magic and illusion stage show, grab food, browse the shops, stop for Phantom Photos, or visit The Horseman’s Tavern. With a theme that changes each Halloween season, Headless Horseman gives returning guests another reason to brave the grounds.

The property also welcomes younger visitors to Children’s Days: A Tiny Taste of Terror, a daytime event for ages 1-9. After Halloween, it returns with the holiday lights of A Frosty Fest and the December event Haunted Holiday: Frostbite. But in October, Crow Hollow belongs to the Horseman.

10) Spookywoods Haunted Attraction
Archdale, North Carolina
spookywoods.com

For more than four decades, Spookywoods at Kersey Valley has been creating unforgettable Halloween experiences for generations of guests. What began in 1985 as a simple scare in an abandoned farmhouse has grown into one of the country’s most recognized haunted attractions—and a Halloween tradition for families, friends, and thrill-seekers throughout North Carolina and beyond.

But Spookywoods is more than a haunted house. It is an ever-evolving experience built from the ground up by the creative team at Kersey Valley. Each season brings new ideas, new sets, new characters, and new scares, with our artists, designers, builders, and performers working year-round to transform the farm into a completely immersive Halloween world.
That commitment to innovation is what keeps guests coming back year after year. Spookywoods has become a multi-generational tradition, where parents who once walked through the attraction themselves now return with their children—and sometimes their grandchildren—to see what’s new and face the scares together.

Located in the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont, Kersey Valley offers guests the opportunity to make their Spookywoods visit part of a larger weekend adventure. With easy access from Greensboro, High Point, Winston-Salem, and surrounding communities, it’s the perfect destination for groups, families, friends, and Halloween fans looking for an experience they won’t find anywhere else.

For 42 years, we’ve built, created, and found new ways to scare you. And we’re not finished yet.

Come see what’s waiting for you at Spookywoods. Your Halloween adventure starts at Kersey Valley.

11) Cutting Edge Haunted House
Fort Worth, Texas
cuttingedgehauntedhouse.com

Fort Worth, TX - Cutting Edge Haunted House transforms a century-old meatpacking plant into a multi-level journey through darkness.

Its industrial halls set the stage for shadowy corridors, startling illusions, and live scares that make it hard to tell what’s waiting around the next turn.

One of Cutting Edge’s most memorable sights and sounds is its zombie drumline. Two-time winners of the PASIC Drumline Battle, the performers bring a pounding rhythm to the experience and a spectacle guests won’t find in an ordinary haunted house.

Cutting Edge puts just as much attention into the performers who bring its scenes to life. Through its in-house program, Boo University, actors audition and train in character work, timing, and guest interaction. That preparation gives every encounter a sense of purpose, whether a performer is building suspense from the shadows or catching guests by surprise.

The attraction has earned four Guinness World Records, including one for the Longest Walk-Through Haunted House, and recognition from USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards. But the real test happens inside the plant. Follow its winding route, listen for the drumline, and see how steady your nerves are when the lights grow dim.

12) Bennett's Curse
Baltimore, Maryland
bennettscurse.com

Maryland - Bennett’s Curse Haunted House invites guests into a dark world of castles, monsters, and demonic lairs.

Known for its medieval themes and intense scares, the attraction brings multiple haunted experiences together under one roof. Each one draws visitors deeper into a setting where the next creature could be waiting just beyond the torchlight.

Bennett’s Curse builds its world with detailed sets, towering monsters, animatronics, and live actors. Gothic passageways give way to sinister chambers, creating the feeling of a journey through a nightmare rather than a series of isolated scares. The scale of the creatures and scenery makes an impression; the performers make sure you don’t have too long to admire it.

After celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025, Bennett’s Curse continues to give horror fans a reason to return. Its mix of medieval fantasy and haunted house thrills offers something memorable for guests who love elaborate environments as much as a good scare.

Gather your bravest friends and enter the Curse together. The castles may look impressive from a distance, but once you’re inside, the only thing that matters is what’s coming toward you.

13) 13th Gate
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
13thgate.com

Baton Rouge, LA - The 13th Gate makes every doorway a leap into another nightmare.

Known for its movie-quality sets and immersive environments, the haunted house moves guests through dramatically different worlds. Ancient ruins, cramped underground passages, dark swamps, and unsettling encounters all become part of a journey where it’s impossible to predict the next scene.

Among the latest additions is The Bone Temple: Mayan Underworld. Guests descend into a jungle-reclaimed temple of crumbling stone, tangled roots, ritual chambers, and creatures lurking overhead. The Cellar brings a different kind of fear, drawing on the gritty atmosphere of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to create a filthy, decaying space that feels disturbingly close to home.

Detailed construction, practical effects, animatronics, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, and live performers bring each world to life. The result is an attraction built as much around discovery as it is around scares: just when you think you understand where you are, the next doorway changes everything.

Outside, the CarnEvil Haunted Midway extends the night with food, games, characters, entertainment, and photo opportunities. Guests can also enter The Summoning of Mary Whitlock, an intimate séance where a medium attempts to contact a young girl’s spirit—and the events around the table grow increasingly unsettling.

At The 13th Gate, surviving one scene only earns you a look at what waits behind the next door.
